Book writing is time-consuming and it can take as long as months of your time. You cannot just pick up a pen or laptop and start writing. There are some vital aspects you have to know about writing and follow, one of which is skill development. You need to learn how to write, arrange your ideas, edit, market your book, etc. When you read books you like, it might serve as a source of inspiration for you when writing your book.
So, I will recommend that you read at least four books in the niche you are interested in writing a book in. But don’t just read. Look closely at the ideas, categories, and other sources in that each book. Inasmuch as writing a book can be tedious, there are enormous benefits which you will find here. Nevertheless, in this article, I will show you how to write your first book.
Before you start your writing process, ask yourself the following questions:
“What did I want to write?
Why did I need to write?
How did I want to write?
Why did I want to write?
Who am I writing to?
What are the ideas people will gain from my book? Why must they buy or spend their money on my book?”
What can guide you in answering the questions above would be for you to:
List five purposes or reasons for writing a book.
Establish what your book is all about.
Establish the ideas behind it.
Understand your writing style and develop it.
Seth Godin says, “Everybody’s writing process is different.” For me, when I want to start writing a book, I like to design pre-book cover design for my book. Seeing this is a motivation for me to write quickly. Bear in mind that writing a book is free but publishing it is not. You should invest in your book to get a good outcome. Things like editing, proofreading, cover designing, formatting, etc that your book will need, should be paid for.
Procrastination is one of my biggest barriers, but I was able to overcome it. I created a 30-day book writing challenge for myself and got myself a gift after completing the challenge. As I said earlier, having a pre-book cover design makes me work fast and also helps me break the chain of procrastination. If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work ahead of you, there are some steps you can take to beat procrastination.
- Outline your book.
- Plan your book’s main ideas.
- Set a challenge and give yourself a deadline.
- Set a space for your writing (office, your home, or any other place that is comfortable and ideal for you).
- Try to write something at first. Don’t leave that blank page: fill it up with words.
- Accept your mistakes as they come. Also, don’t neglect your draft because of your mistakes. It is not advisable to write and edit at the same time as they are two different jobs that should be done separately.
- Fight writer’s block.
- Track your improvement.
- Take a break before editing
- Celebrate your success.
